About us

AustroCel Hallein GmbH is an established company within the Austrian industry, which today is one of the most innovative producers in the sector and is recognized as one of the leading biorefineries in Europe.

The company employs 342 people, generates an annual turnover of 182 million euros and has a production capacity of 150,000 tons of Biomaterials, Bioperformance products and Biofuels - including bioethanol from residues and biogas. In addition, the modern biorefinery supplies green electricity and district heating for its own operations and the region, providing around 30,000 households with electricity and/or heat. Bioethanol production covers almost 1% of the petrol demand in Austria.

In addition to high-quality softwood pulp for high-end textile applications, AustroCel Hallein is a recognized supplier of specialty cellulose for non-textile applications in the pharmaceutical, food and construction industries. The B Corp-certified company transforms PEFC-controlled wood residues from the Central European sawmill industry into natural value streams 'down to the last fibre' and beyond. As an innovation center, it scales Biofuels and Bioperformance products (such as the new Hydrogel Granules) and sets new standards.

Purpose & Vision

We unlock the power of nature for a greener tomorrow.

With a pioneering spirit, together we are setting new standards in the sustainable use of wood “down to the last fibre”. In doing so, we are becoming the safest and most attractive integrated Biorefinery.

Our Mission

In our day to day work, safety comes first. Which is why we set the highest standards for ourselves and our employees.

We assist our employees in developing their professional and personal skills and ensure knowledge is effectively shared within the company.

We build bridges between individuals and enhance collaboration across different teams. To achieve this, we engage in active communication both internally and externally.

Our Mission

We continually enhance our safety standards and inspire individuals to take responsibility for their actions.

We go the extra mile and are ready to take bold steps. We act with courage, make confident decisions, and blaze new trails — always with foresight and awareness of our limitations. Setbacks do not deter us, as we excel in implementation. By setting ambitious goals, we continuously improve our profitability.

We foster a pioneering spirit, stay dynamic, and simultaneously promote openness and diversity.

Our Mission

We continuously modernise our systems, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards. We use (exploit) the residual value of wood to recover otherwise wasted (burnt) materials and turn them into a new form of value that enhance our company's profitability.

Through key innovations, new technologies, and strategic investments, we are establishing the benchmark for biorefineries. To accomplish this, we promote a sustainable culture of innovation and prepare innovative products for the market.

By fostering cooperation and forming partnerships, we position ourselves as a preferred market participant, bridging the gap between traditional industry and future needs.

Growing our future

The future starts now. Together, we work on innovations, use our resources as efficiently as possible, and configure processes and activities on a sustainable basis. AustroCel produces specialty cellulose using residual spruce wood from sawmills in the surrounding region. We are a supplier of green energy for the region, and of Biofuels for Europe. Employees who want to grow at and with our company now have the opportunity to turn their vocation into a career.

Management

Experience and competence for a greener tomorrow

As a company, we are aware of our responsibility and act as a pioneer when it comes to sustainability. With the know-how of our experienced professionals and the commitment of our employees and managers, we are actively shaping the future and driving innovation.

Practising community values

For AustroCel Hallein, sustainability means fostering strong community ties. We engage with neighbors, suppliers, authorities, and media through regular meetings to promote dialogue and good relations.
Company and exhibition tours enable transparent, informative cooperation within society and in our region. Cooperations with educational institutions, such as the higher Technical School (HTL) Hallein, enable pupils to establish contacts with the worklife at an early stage and we meet potential employees.
Employees receive quick, uncomplicated advice and support on issues relating to care or help in the event of illness thanks to our long-standing partnership with the “Salzburger Hilfswerk”.

We are also a partner of the initiative ‘Naturwiese Salzburg’ and turn unused green spaces into flower meadows in order to promote biodiversity and create a habitat for insects and our own bees. In the fish farm of the Hallein Fishing Association, just behind our factory premises, brown trout are bred in a natural, sustainable way and released after only about three years to increase the local fish population in the region. To promote low-CO2 mobility, we have been actively supporting the city of Hallein’s e-car sharing project since November 2021.

Our history – Where we come from

In 1890, the pulp mill The Kellner-Partington Paper Pulp Co. Ltd. was founded at the Hallein site which belonged to Austrian Dr Carl Kellner from Vienna.

From 1917 to 1979, the former British company was owned by the Norwegian holding company BORREGAARD, a highly respected Biorefinery company to this day

After the takeover by the German Papierwerke Waldhof Aschaffenburg (PWA) and the Austrian Läderbank, the company was renamed Hallein Papier AG in 1980

After the takeover by the Swedish SCA Group in 1995, the company was renamed SCA FINE PAPER Hallein AG and integrated into the parent company

Under the name “Modo Papier Hallein”, the company develops into one of the largest industrial companies in the country before the Finnish Metsä-Serla Group acquires the company in 2000 and the name is changed to M-real Hallein AG in 2011. Due to market consolidation in the graphic paper sector, M-real Hallein AG ceases paper production in Hallein and from then on only produces market pulp for other paper mills

In 2011, the Austrian Schweighofer Group buys the company and modernizes the plant with investments of 60 million euros. High-purity pulp for the textile industry and other special applications has been produced in Hallein since 2013.

In September 2017, AustroCel Hallein was acquired by TowerBrook Capital Partners, one of the leading European and US investment companies. TowerBrook is the first private equity firm to be certified as a B-Corporation
